One Father Too Many

Apparently someone didn't watch the "New Asylums." This just should not be a daily occurrence. It simply should not.

It's spooky to see this link on your blog, mainly because sitting on my bookshelf right now I have an autographed copy of Pete Earley's book Hot House which I read around the time I started working in corrections. In 2003 I got a phone call during my clinic from a reporter wanting to do a story on the mentally ill in corrections. It was him. I didn't know until later, after the story you linked appeared in the Post, that he had a mentally ill son.

My take on this is that you don't ever, ever give up. The answer is not to take all the prisoners out of the prison. The answer is to make the prison better. If a facility is bad for the mentally ill then it's also bad for all the other inmates. I disagree with the California monitor that anything is "broken beyond repair". It's the monitor's job to enforce what repairs need to be done.
